Small Acreage Farms and Horses

by Debora Johnson

Many of us have always wanted a horse and wondered if we had enough acreage to keep a horse. There are a number of issues that must be addressed from a legal perspective.

  • Covenants
  • Zoning regulations locally
  • Acreage requirements
  • Health issues
  • Restrictions on livestock
  • Proper drainage
  • Streams and restrictions
  • Erosion
  • Impact on neighbors

These are only a few areas to check--a beginning. Contacting the farm bureau in your area will give you a wealth of information. They know the zoning regulations, codes, etc. associated with livestock and agriculture. They can also refer you to someone who can help you in particular situation.

After passing this hurdle, if you are lucky enough to be able to have limited acreage and a horse the following link will be very beneficial to you.
