Modern Feral Horses

by Debora Johnson

Feral horses have descended from domestic horses. They roam free and are not tame. It is, however, possible to tame and domesticate these horses and ponies. The following are examples of modern day feral horses and ponies:

  • Banker Horse - The Banker horse lives on the Outer Banks of North Carolina
  • Brumby - The feral horse of Australia.
  • Chincoteague Pony - The Chincoteague Pony actually lives in a semi-feral state on Assateague Island off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland. Every year there is a roundup of these ponies. They are herded between Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. The ponies are auctioned.
