Benefits of Horse Ownership

by Debora Johnson

The above pictures are of my horse, A Patchy, my husband and myself. We were out on Halloween, Oct. 31, 2009, playing with the horses. Here we were just reinforcing ground manners and training such as standing, backing, moving left and right, kisses, parking out, bending at the pole, etc. from the ground. A Patchy is a wonderfully, responsive animal with the kindest and sweetest temperament. He has a desire to please and learns really quickly. He is sound and solid--no bad habits as yet! He is rock solid and as bomb proof as a horse can get. I must make it perfectly clear, however, that I am NOT biased!

The benefits of owning a horse are many--from the tangible to the intangible. It brings with it so many personal feelings that are difficult, if not impossible to explain. For me, the horses are a passion. It would be difficult to imagine my life without having them a part of me. Among the quantified benefits to us are: physical, mental, emotional, social, stress reduction, mood improvement, image improvement, responsibility, and many more. Most everyone could benefit from the ownership (instead of ownership I would rather say partnership) of a horse (or other animal) i.e., youth, the challenged, and even in helping to improve children with autism.
