Inflammatory Airway Disease in Horses

What is Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) in horses? IAD covers several types of inflammation of the lower respiratory tract. It is not contagious. It has a high incidence in athletic horses, 22-50%, according to Merck Vet Manual

Causes

  • Allergies
  • Pulmonary Stress
  • Dust in atmosphere
  • Dust in hay
  • Atmospheric pollutants
  • Persistent respiratory viral or bacterial infections

Symptoms

  • Chronic cough
  • Chronic nasal discharge
  • Poor performance

Treatment

The type of IAD determines the therapeutic plan. Among these plans are aerosol broncho dilator therapy, low dose interferon-a, systemic corticosteroid therapy, and mast cell-stabilizing drugs. For more detailed information Inflammatory airway disease (IAD)
