Canoe and Kayak Access Points
- Abel Reservoir This 185-acre reservoir is long and riverine; it is almost too long for a single battery electric motor if you plan on traveling its length. There is residential development along the shoreline, although development is slow and sparse. Abel is a water supply for Stafford County. This is a fun place to kayak. Bill and I enjoyed our paddle. There is parking and a gravel launching site. There are no fees. The reservoir is stocked with fish and a fishing license is required. For more information, call the Stafford County Parks and Recreation Department, 540-752-5632.
- Angler's Inn River Access - "This is a very popular site for kayakers and hikers. Best access for paddlers if through an NPS gate at the lower parking lot. Boats need to be carried across a bridge and down to the river. The parking area is designed to handle more than 20 vehicles but is temporarily closed due to construction at the C&O Canal towpath breach at Canal mile 12. According to a National Park Service notice, 'This much needed repair will restore water flow in the canal after the 125 foot breach in the towpath is rebuilt. This work will require a closure of all parking areas across from the Old Angler's Inn, as well as the lower kayak drop off lot....The expected completion date for the work remains fall 2012.'"
