Kuznet or Kuznetsk Horse Breed Now Extinct
History Prior to the second half of the 19th century there was a very large horse that had been developed. It was called the Kuznet or Kuznetsh. The Kuznet is the foundation for many of the Siberian horse breeds. Information on the Kuznet is contradictory and incomplete. Through cross breeding the Kuznet changed its type. It was cross bred with the Thoroughbred, Orlov Trotter, and American Saddlebred in the second half of the 19th century. Some Belgiums and Norman-Anglo blood was also infused. Physical Description It is said that the Kuznet had a long bony, soft back, crooked limbs, short pasterns and flat hooves. So, why then, would it be the foundation for many of the Siberian breeds? This breed was strong, had wonderful endurance, was undemanding, had good pulling power, and showed good movement. It also had a massive skeleton, good joints, a long wide croup, strong muscles, and a deep but rather flat rib cage. They stood approximately 15.3 hands high at the withers. Influences The Kuznet influenced many breeds including the Megezh type of Yuket, Verkhoyansk (Middle Kolyma), and Chumysh. For More Information: |
